Puerto Vallarta & Lake Tahoe–the Best of Both Worlds

October 26, 2010 by

Upon retiring fourteen years ago, we spent a great deal of time traveling the world in search for the perfect retirement haven. Eleven years ago we selected Puerto Vallarta, Mexico as the location for our main retirement residence.

Vallarta, located on the Mexican Riviera and only two to four hours from most major cities in the US, offers all of the modern day conveniences, numerous activities for retirees, fine dining and social life, and perfect weather for almost eight months of the year, from October through May. During those months, the average daily temperature is 73*F with an average monthly rainfall of less than 0.4 inches of rain; in other words, more than 97% of the days are absolutely ideal for golfing, tennis, fishing, or what ever outdoor activity interests you.

The weather in Vallarta during the summer months of June through September is similar to that of Houston, Texas with high temperatures during the daytime and evening showers almost every other night. Due to the oppressive tropical summers, most of the retirees use this time period for travel or visiting their friends and families back in the States or Canada.

We have selected the Lake Tahoe area as our summer residence for those months where the average daily temperature is 68*F with an average monthly rainfall of less than 0.3 inches of rain; resulting in sunny days more than 93% of the summer time period and absolutely ideal for all outdoor activities.

By combining Vallarta with Tahoe, we are pretty much assured of perfect weather year round with a better than 95% probability of a sunny day tomorrow. In fact, the annual rainfall in our world averages about four inches which is comparable to a single thunder storm in most other regions of the world!

Aside from perfect weather for eight months in Vallarta and four months in Tahoe, there are a number of other similarities to be found between these two beautiful areas. Both have magnificent mountainside and water views. Tahoe is nestled along the southern shore of the 22 mile long Lake Tahoe, the second deepest lake in the US and eighth deepest in the world, measuring 1,645 feet at its deepest point. Vallarta is nestled on the south shore of the 25 mile diameter Banderas Bay, one of the deepest bays in the world, measuring 3,000 feet at its deepest point.

Pines are abundant in Tahoe whereas palms are abundant in Vallarta. Many of the colorful birds in Tahoe are blue jays and red cardinals whereas many of Vallarta’s are yellow and black orioles and green parrots. While brown bears roam the mountainsides around Lake Tahoe scavenging for scraps of food, crocodiles are doing the same around Vallarta’s ponds; beware of both!

The mountain views are simply majestic with 3,000 foot elevation changes in every direction, providing spectacular horseback riding and hiking trails around both areas. Golf, tennis, fishing, and boating are just a few of the many daytime activities available in both cities. The rolling hills and shorelines provide the perfect terrain for some of the most beautiful golf courses found anywhere. Very active nightlife in both cities can be enjoyed in the wonderful restaurants and nightclubs. Of course, South Lake Tahoe, Nevada is famous for its world class casinos but few know that Vallarta also has a new casino with slot machines; more are sure to come if and when gambling is fully legalized in the area.

Although both of these clean, safe, and visitor friendly areas host millions of tourists annually, Puerto Vallarta, with its 350,000 inhabitants is substantially more populated than the Greater Lake Tahoe Basin which has only 55,000 permanent residents. In order to serve the residents and tourists, each area has at least three modern hospitals, a number of schools and university branches, modern shopping centers, and all the services required to support the people in the area. Both areas have high speed internet service and satellite TV, however mail delivery in Vallarta is terribly slow and it’s virtually non-existent in many communities around Lake Tahoe.

Puerto Vallarta has a huge modern airport, whereas Lake Tahoe is accessed from the Reno Airport which is approximately 40 miles away. There are three huge modern marinas with moorage for 1,200 large yachts in the Puerto Vallarta area and there are a number of small marinas scattered around Lake Tahoe for docking smaller boats used on the lake. Vallarta has a huge modern Maritime Terminal serving the passenger cruise ships that arrive daily; obviously, there is no such Maritime Terminal in the Tahoe area! On the other hand, Tahoe has a number of beautiful ski lodges and again quite obviously, Vallarta has no such lodges!

In summarizing, for those of you fortunate baby boomers wondering what to do with the rest of your life and where to do it, we suggest that you seriously consider this combination of retirement areas; living in Puerto Vallarta during the winter months and Lake Tahoe during the summer months represents the very best of both worlds.

South Carolina has a great number of beautiful, affordable lake communities for any budget and lifestyle, be it retirement or relocation.

Lake Thurmond is seventy thousand acres, and is one of the largest water bodies in South Carolina. Sandwiched amidst two parts of the lake just beyond McCormick, surrounded by half a million plus acres of Sumter National Forest, encompassing forty hundred acres is Savannah Lakes Village community. The 4,300 real estate owners have access to a twenty three thousand square foot recreation center, bowling alley, eighty clubs of various types, shuffleboard, mini-golf course, bocce ball courts, 2 eighteen golf courses with practice facilities and matches; a grill-deli; a couple of clubhouses with cafeterias, 4 tennis courts, indoor and outdoor pools. So welcome are guests that they maintain an eighty room inn at the marina and 2 bedroom townhouses to hire.

One of the best places when searching for a Carolina retirement community! Northeast of Savannah Lakes Village is the city of Greenwood South Carolina. Around 12 miles east of Greenwood you have the 11,000 acre Lake Greenwood. The Plantation at Grand Harbor is sixty miles from Greenville-Spartanburg airport and roughly seventy miles to Columbia. You’ll have a golf and yacht clubhouse with catering, a marina, a 50 acre equestrian center; nature reserve, spas, the beach on Lake Greenwood and pools, plus a gym.

One more community on Lake Greenwood is the forty acre New Urbanism community of Palmetto Crossing. But the most significant facility is The Palmetto Club, with its tavern, rooftop club, fireside, billiards, concierge, and screening theater for movies. There is a gymnasium, swimming pool and a eighty four slip marina. Palmetto Crossing offers reasonably priced condo homes, single family homes and town homes. It is has similar conveniences to a gated community.

Situated on the 50 thousand acres of Lake Murray, Harbor Watch is a little west of Columbia South Carolina. This affordable Carolina retirement community is merely one hundred thirty acres. 270 residences are envisaged to be constructed; starting at approximately $50K for a one-fourth acre plot. They have a chipping and putting green, clubhouse with a kitchen that can be used, 2 tennis courts, a pool with lake views, and an exercise room. Residents of this community come here for one reason, the lake.

In the northwestern end of the state, amidst the mountains, you have the 18,000 acre Lake Keowee. On the lake shorefront about an hour from Greenville, 2 from Atlanta, Georgia and Charlotte, North Carolina is Keowee Key. This Carolina retirement community provides single family homes, town homes and condo living, together with plain land commencing at about $120,000. Just outside the city limits of Houston, Texas, about 30 to 45 minutes north, is beautiful Montgomery County. It has always been a getaway for many Houston area and surrounding residents. With the beautiful Lake Conroe, fishing and camping sites are always in demand, and in peak holiday seasons, it has been said it is hard to find a camp site if you don’t get there first.

Now there are thriving new master-planned communities springing up, with all the added comforts that were not once available outside the city. Is Community Lifestyle in the Carolinas your Best Place?

October 17, 2010 by

I’m often asked which cities and towns in North Carolina and South Carolina are more affordable than others, and if North Carolina is more affordable than South Carolina, and vice versa.

First of all, look for communities that are less like a “resort” and more like a “community”. Remember, all those amenities cost money and someone has to pay for them making them less affordable in the long run.

Many communities in North Carolina and South Carolina have golf memberships, tennis memberships, social memberships, and even equestrian memberships. There are fees associated with all of them, and you don’t want to find out how much they are, after you settle into what you thought was your Best Place.

There can be fees for using the health club, pool, boat docks, and community room for social events. Recently, I was researching several communities in

North Carolina and I came across a golf community that had an initiation fee of $100,000! Plus yearly dues of $7,000, and a dining minimum of $1400 per year. I don’t know about you, but that’s one heck of a chunk of change

It doesn’t make much sense to choose a golf community, if you then can’t afford the membership and fees associated with it. Most communities have either a

Property Owners Association or a Homeowners Association, and each have fees associated with them.  If you own a townhouse or condominium, the fees are usually higher.

Many retirees today are seeking out retirement communities in North Carolina and South Carolina based on a choice of lifestyle and their interests, and they need to find out before hand if the fees associated with those activities will make it impossible to pursue them.

One way to find an affordable lifestyle in North Carolina and South Carolina is to look at some of the many small charming towns. They’re a good bet whether you’re retiring or relocating to the Carolinas.

I like to find small towns with active communities, just outside the larger metropolitan areas, or small towns within close proximity to other small towns,or small towns with colleges in them. These situations give you the advantage of small town living, but with big town services.

When I say small towns, I’m talking about towns of approximately 10-30,000 people.  Towns like Banner Elk, Blowing Rock and Boone in North Carolina are great examples of living in a “cluster” of smaller towns that have a lot to offer.

The western part of North Carolina also has some of the best places to live in the Carolina’s, like Cashiers, Fontana Village, Bryson City and Waynesville.

For coastal living, one of my very favorites is New Bern. It’s one of the best places I’ve been to in North Carolina. It’s a quaint small town with a historic housing stock and beautiful open spaces. The Neuse and Trent Rivers come together in the middle of Town. It’s gorgeous!

Although it’s still considered a small town, you won’t lack for shopping, culture and great restaurants. The ocean is only 40 minutes away and the Pamlico

Sound is right next door. And the people are some of the nicest I’ve ever met!

In South Carolina, you’ll find beautiful, quaint, small town living in places like Anderson, Beaufort, Summerville, and Georgetown.

Today, there are an increasing number of people interested in living just outside small downtowns where they can walk to shopping, restaurants, and activities.  Especially with the price of gas! Small towns in North Carolina and South Carolina have become very popular for relocating empty-nesters, as well as boomer retirees.

There’s usually a greater sense of “community” in these smaller towns, and opportunities to get involved as a volunteer or civic leader.

Other advantages includeless traffic, more affordable housing and usually lower taxes. You might also find some great old houses just waiting for you to restore them.

Whether you’re relocating to the Carolina’s or looking for an active adult retirement community, there’s a small town that could be just right for you.

But wait, I must also tell you of a possible downside. In these small towns, you won’t find as much diversity in the people and you might be considered an “outsider” at first, and you may find that all the cultural events and services you want may not be readily available.

Either way, if you pick a small town in North Carolina or South Carolina that’s a short ride from one of its urban areas, you’ll be assured of a variety of services, good medical care and plenty of activities to keep you busy.

There is also the added benefit if you find a community with a college or branch of a major university, where you can experience plently of intellectual stimulation and diversity.

All and all, if you use my “cluster” concept of relocating or retiring around other small towns, the drawbacks will be far outweighed by the slower pace, quality of lifestyle and lower cost of living.

Two of my favorite small Best Places in the Carolinas are Lenoir, North Carolina which was rencently voted a “Hot Bargain” in National Geographic Adventure Magazine, and Aiken, South Carolina, which is located in the middle of beautiful horse country just northeast of Augusta, GA.

Adult Communities for the Best Elder Care

October 16, 2010 by

Getting older should be an exciting part of life, but sometimes it comes with some physical impediments. In this case, it might be a good idea to think about checking into adult communities to get top-quality elder care. Such elder care services allow family members to go to work and enjoy their personal lives without having to worry that the senior citizen is safe and being cared for. One of the main purposes of these services is to delay or prevent the need to move into a nursing home by offering alternative care opportunities to stay social. Caring for an aging parent can be a real challenge for family members, but with senior retirement options, senior citizens can get the right kind of care and attention that they need.

When a senior member of the family is left at home for the whole day, it can be a burden for the children who are at work. It’s important to be with the senior member at all times, and elder care services can guarantee this. From cooking and cleaning to ensuring that medications are taken at the right time, adult communities give peace of mind to families that are unable to take care of a loved one throughout the whole day. To make sure that seniors are living a safe and happy life even after retirement, it is advisable to look out for a senior retirement facility that offers recreational activities along with the right elder care. Elders sometimes need a lot of help with daily tasks, be it bathing, walking, eating, cooking, washing, or personal care. For family members it might not be possible to take care of all of these things, but the elder care services provided in adult communities should be taken note of.

Before deciding on an elder care service, some questions need to be taken into consideration, like whether the aging person prefers a male or female to help and things that might make the person uncomfortable. With a large number of adult communities, a variety of services are being offered and can be chosen accordingly. The best elder care can also be experienced at senior retirement communities where special staff is assigned to each individual so that their needs and requirements are properly addressed. The staff at these facilities listens to the elderly people to help them with their personal care, meals, and other basic requirements.

For seniors, whether or not they require assistance to live a happy life can be determined by their physical abilities. The senior retirement lifestyle is an option that children can select to offer some of the best elder care services to their aging parents. Elderly people might need help with cooking, bathing, and washing, among other things, and if they move into adult communities, they can rest assured that they will receive the best services.

Yucatan Real Estate – Retirement in Mexico at its Best

October 15, 2010 by

When you think of Mexico Retirement Communities, which place names come to mind? Maybe Lake Chapala or Puerto Vallarta? While these are excellent retirement choices, you may also wish to consider Yucatan Real Estate, especially in the capital of Merida for your retirement.

Merida, a city of 800,000 people, is a beautiful colonial city that is full of culture, history and activity, but where retirees can still relax and enjoy a worry-free retirement with all their necessities nearby.

The colorfully painted homes and 2 or 3 storey buildings line narrow roads, which run in a perfectly straight line through the old city. In the colonial city center, you’re likely to see a horse drawn carriage or bicycles blended in with cars and modern transportation, to hear traditional music and to find great opportunities to try local food.

Merida is also home to the largest population of Mayan people; walking through the streets of Merida, you will have a very good chance of hearing people speaking Mayan as their day to day language, with Spanish as the main language. The city was originally Mayan, established in the 13th century, and abandoned by the Mayans before the Spanish arrived in the 16th century, renaming the city Merida after the city in Spain.

In the touristic colonial center, many people also speak English, and are very willing to help new residents find their way around. Near the city’s main attractions, police booths also include pamphlets and information in English.

The city is clean, picturesque and very safe. On Sundays the old folks get together to dance in the city square, and the young people gather in the parks. For a retiree, this relaxing style of life in a year-round warm climate is ideal.

But don’t imagine that Merida is a backwards city, stuck in the past; the real, living culture of the old city is the heart of a thriving metropolis which includes all kinds of communities, property types, a diverse economy and many, many activities and services.

Nearby golf courses, live music, jazz concerts, art shows – both traditional and modern – close access to the touristy beachfront (or a only a little further to more isolated beaches, if that appeals more to you) are only a few of the activities for retirement in Yucatan’s capital.

Because of NAFTA, living in Mexico has come to offer many of the same conveniences of living in the U.S. or Canada, and Merida more so than most parts of the country. The metropolitan area also includes modern shopping malls, new large-screen movie theaters, and international restaurants. Health care is among the best in this part of the world, drawing residents from central America. The city is also planning on investing directly into retirement-focused facilities in the near future, making retirement even more attractive here.

And what kind of property do you imagine for your retirement? A luxury beachfront condo, a beautiful single family home near a golf course, a traditional Mexican home in a Colonial neighborhood? Merida offers these and much more, all at prices more accessible than you might imagine.

Consider Merida for your retirement. It might just be the place for you.
